The Punishment Period
The Punishment Period explores the period between 1867 and 1905 in New South Wales Prisons History.
The period between 1867 and 1905 saw some of the harshest punishments reintroduced to New South Wales since the convict era. Known as the Separate System, this era physically enforced compliance and silence throughout the gaol system, including here in Maitland Gaol. This exhibition explores the punishments used throughout the state and touches on the effects this had on prisoners incarcerated during this period.
Exhibition Dates – February 2020 - June 2020
